About the Artist

Cheryl Magellen - Biography

Painter, Creator, Consultant

Painting has been a self-actualizing journey for me. It has commanded most of my waking hours and crosses the barrier into dreams. It challenges and demands my self-determination and self-motivation. It insists on pushing the limits of my skill and creativity each and every time I stand before the easel. I continue to be a willing slave to the beauty of the human form and the disciplines of representational art. I was asked recently why I primarily paint women. My best answer is that I have only seen the world through the lens of being a woman. While we all have different personalities, we are still united at our core.

Cheryl began her love affair with the drawing of portraits and figures by copying the faces of pop star personalities from magazines as a teenager. When she graduated from college, her BA degree in Fine Art focused on life drawing in graphite. It was not until 2010 that she added color to her world. Looking to fast-track her knowledge of color and paint, she nested under the wings of over 18 artist high-fliers in Oregon, California and the Scottsdale Artists' School in Arizona. She can currently be found working and teaching online classes from her home in Prospect, Oregon and teaches in-person classes in Medford, Oregon.

Cheryl's artistic recognition is rapidly expanding and her list of awards is growing by leaps and bounds. She was accepted into both the Oil Painter's of America's National and Regional exhibitions in 2017. She received 2nd place in the 2016 OPA Spring Online Showcase, was accepted in the American Women Artists Tucson Museum show, and received a scholarship award from the Portrait Artists of Arizona annual exhibition. She is an active member of the Portrait Society of America, Cecelia Beaux Foundation, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Women Artists of the West, American Women Artists, Portrait Society of Nevada, and other local organizations.
